CAHABA RIVER ARTICLE: J.B. mentioned an article in a post this morning about the Cahaba River… here is the link:
I am pretty sure J.B. still gets the printed magazine; most of us read it all online now. The Cahaba is truly a treasure… I would love to take a canoe ride all the way down to Cahawba, the first permanent state capital of Alabama from 1820 to 1825. It is now a ghost town and state historic site. A major flood struck the town in 1825, causing a portion of the statehouse to collapse. People who were opposed to the capital’s location at Cahaba used this as an argument for moving the capital to Tuscaloosa, which was approved by the legislature in January of 1826.
NINE IN A ROW: Birmingham is reporting 84 degrees at 3:00, so it is safe to say today will be the ninth consecutive day with temperatures below 90 degrees. Simply amazing for July in Alabama.
OUR WEEKEND: Both the NAM and the GFS are printing 93 for Birmingham tomorrow… the models have been way too warm lately, but we will go ahead and forecast a high in the low 90s, which will break our sub-90 degree streak if correct. The humidity will stay low, however, and tomorrow morning will be very pleasant with lows well down in the 60s. We will probably see some 50s again for the cooler spots across North and Central Alabama. Tomorrow will remain dry.
We will continue to mention the risk of scattered, mainly afternoon and evening showers and storms Sunday as moist air moves in from the south, and a front approaches from the north. A few strong storms are possible over North Alabama late in the day as SPC has low end severe weather probabilities on their Day 3 convective outlook.
NEXT WEEK: This front will come to a stop somewhere in Tennessee, and moist air will cover Alabama all of next week with a daily chance of scattered showers and storms, possibly numerous at times. Afternoon highs should be mostly in the 86 to 90 degree range as our “cool summer” continues.
TROPICAL WEATHER: The National Hurricane Center does not see any prospect of tropical development over the next few days. This time of year you can always find a tropical wave somewhere out in the Atlantic, but very few develop into tropical depressions or storms. In fact, one of those tropical waves has some Sahara dust in it.
AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday for the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, with just a few scattered showers and storms around. Highs in the upper 80s on the immediate coast.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
