A Wet Week For Alabama

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

WET AT TIMES THROUGH FRIDAY: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see that the guys at HPC (the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center) are forecasting 5 to 7 inches of rain across North Alabama through Friday night. I am not sure we get that much, but no doubt there will a chance of rain every day this week as a moist air mass sets up across the state, and a mean upper trough continues over the eastern U.S. with a series of short waves passing through the flow.

TODAY: Actually, today we figure convection will be at a minimum across the state with subsidence (sinking air) in the wave of a short wave that moved through last night. There could be a few showers and storms around this afternoon, but they should be pretty widely scattered. Today’s high will be in the 87 to 90 degree range.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: Expect scattered to numerous showers and storms on a daily basis with highs dropping back into the mid 80s. The rain won’t be continuous, and due to the convective nature of summer rain in Alabama, the distribution won’t be especially even, but you have to figure most places will see at least two inches of rain, with potential for much more as the HPC guys suggest.

WEEKEND PEEK: While the chance of showers and storms will continue into the weekend, they should begin to thin out a bit as an upper ridge begins to rebuild across the Deep South. Highs between 87 and 90 with some sun away from the showers.

BEACH VACATION: The weather will be generally unsettled across the Gulf Coast this week; for the areas from Panama City west to Gulf Shores expect only about 2 to 4 hours of sunshine each day with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Highs on the coast will be in the mid 80s, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning was 83 degrees. The tropics remain very quiet and tropical storms or hurricanes won’t be a problem this week.
