Tropics May be Heating Up Again

| August 30, 2020 @ 1:10 pm

I thought we might get a brief respite from tropical development, but that seems to have been a pipe dream.

Low pressure expected to develop tomorrow off the coasts of North Carolina and South Carolina will move east and northeast, remaining of the U.S. coast and missing Bermuda.  This system has a high chance (70 percent) of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next five days according to the National Hurricane Center.  Whether it can become a tropical storm will remain to be seen.

In the eastern Caribbean, thunderstorm activity has increased with a tropical wave  This system has a 60 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone according to the NHC.  It should track into Central America near Belize, Honduras, or Nicaragua by late in the week.  From there, it would likely cross the Bay of Campeche and move into Mexico.  It does not appear to be a threat to the United States thanks to building high pressure that will extend across the entire southern United States by the weekend.

There are two other tropical waves in the eastern Atlantic, but the NHC puts the chances of them developing fairly low for now.   The European model does develop a tropical cyclone near the Cape Verde Islands by midweek and tracks it to near the northern Leewards by midweek of the following week.

The next names on the list are Nana, Omar, and Paulette.
