Flooding is a Big Problem: Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

| May 4, 2021 @ 4:54 pm

Flash flood warnings continue for parts of Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Jefferson, Shelby, and Talladega Counties.

It is a very serious situation with flooding ongoing and additional heavy rainfall moving across the area.

Widespread flooding has been reported in parts of the Birmingham Metropolitan area. Earlier, there were numerous reports on flooding from Birmingham’s Southside, Homewood, Hoover, and Vestavia as well as Mountain Brook.

Additional heavy rain and storms over Bibb County will cross the warned area from Bibb through Shelby and southern Jefferson Counties over the next hour, causing additional serious flooding. A flash flood emergency may be issued.

The best advice is to please stay home over the next two hours in the flood warning areas! Please be careful if you have to go out. Do not drive around flood barricades, and do not drive or walk into standing water. You do not know how deep it might be.

In addition, the wind threat is high across areas south of the rain and storms across North Central ALabama. The airmass is very unstable over the southern half of the state, with CAPE values exceeding 2,500 joules/kg and reaching over 4,000 joules/kg in areas. The threat of very high winds is there as well as the threat of a few tornadoes. A tornado watch is in effect from Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa, and Tallapoosa Counties and points south.
