NOAA Plane Confirms Ida is Stronger

| August 28, 2021 @ 4:59 pm

The NOAA Hurricane Hunter plane currently investigating Hurricane Ida found flight-level winds of near 90 knots, or about 90 mph at the surface. That was confirmed with SFMR surface wind estimating equipment as well.

The central pressure was down to around 974 mb.

The hurricane now has a large central dense overcast with a dramatic eye showing up on visible satellite imagery. Numerous hot towers are shooting up into the atmosphere in the CDO. There is a tremendous amount of lightning in the outer rain bands of the storm, a sign of intensification.

Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters are enroute to the storm from their temporary base in San Antonio and will be on station sampling the hurricane also.
