Midday Nowcast: A Few Clouds on this Mild December Day

| December 1, 2021 @ 11:34 am

It is certainly not feeling like December across the area today as an area of high pressure is centered to our south and east, and will remain firmly in control our weather for the rest of the week. A ridge is building in the upper-levels as well and that is going to be providing us great weather with mainly sunny, mild days, and clear nights.

We reach the upper 60s and lower 70s across North/Central Alabama this afternoon, followed by low to mid 70s tomorrow and Friday, which are 10-15 degrees above average for early December in Alabama.

WEEKEND WEATHER: The pattern doesn’t change much over the weekend. Saturday will remain dry with highs in the low 70s. On Sunday, highs will again be in the low 70s, but clouds will increase late as a cold front will bring rain to the state Sunday night and early Monday morning. Moisture will be limited, and rain amounts should be 1/4 inch or less for most communities.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday’s SEC Championship game between Alabama and Georgia will be played in Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta (3p CT kickoff). The day in Atlanta will be dry and mild… with a partly sunny sky temperatures will reach 70 degrees by mid-afternoon.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 91F at Palm Springs and Modesto City, CA. The lowest observation was 3F at Portage, ME.

WEATHER ON THIS DATE IN 1831: The coldest December of record in the northeastern U.S. commenced. Temperatures in New York City averaged 22 degrees, with just four days above freezing, and at Burlington VT the temperature never did get above freezing. The Erie Canal was closed the first day of December, and remained closed the entire month.
