Midday Nowcast: Cloudy and Cold First Day of Winter

| December 21, 2021 @ 10:40 am

The winter solstice occurred at 9:59AM, and it certainly looks and feels like winter out there today. A surface low in the Gulf and an upper low working across the state today, is keeping it cloudy, cold, and wet.

Most of the widespread rain has pushed east of the area, but we are still dealing with scattered showers underneath the upper low; temperatures are holding in the 40s today.

The sky clears tonight and temperatures will fall to near freezing by tomorrow morning. There will likely be some areas of fog overnight as well.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: Blue sky and sunshine return in full supply these two days; highs Wednesday will be in the low to mid 50s, and we’ll see highs in the low 60s on Thursday.

CHRISTMAS EVE & CHRISTMAS DAY: Spring-like warmth highlights the holiday forecast…Both days will feature a mix of sun and clouds; highs Friday will be in the upper 60s, followed by low 70s on Saturday…No jackets and gloves this year, it’ll be shorts and flip-flops for many people in Alabama. This Christmas is much warmer than last year; Christmas 2020 was sunny and cold with a morning low of 24°, while the afternoon high was 38°, and wind chills were below freezing.
