Severe Thunderstorm Watch Canceled for Remaining Counties; Severe Threat Over for Today

| December 30, 2021 @ 5:11 pm

NWS Birmingham has canceled the Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Barbour, Bullock, Pike, and Russell counties as the threat for severe storms have moved out of those locations. No more counties in Central Alabama remain in the watch, and the severe weather threat has ended for the day.

As of 5:00 pm, much of North/Central Alabama is dry at the moment except for the extreme southeastern parts where a few scattered showers are occurring over a small portion of Pike and Barbour counties. There is a very small chance of a few isolated showers across the area for tonight through the overnight hours, but the likelihood of those occurring are very unlikely. We will have areas of dense fog to form, mainly along and north of the I-85 corridor tonight, with visibilities dropping to less than one mile. That fog could linger for a while during the morning hours on Friday.

All modes of severe weather continue to look to be possible across North/Central Alabama from Saturday afternoon through the early morning hours on Sunday. Along with the severe threat, we will also have heavy rainfall at times which may lead to some flash and areal flooding issues, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas. It will also be quite breezy at times, with winds gusting to as high as 35 mph outside of any thunderstorm activity. A Wind Advisory may need to be issued at some point on Friday if gusty winds still look to be likely.
