Winter Weather Advisories Expanded: Bursts of Heavy Snow Moving Across Mississippi Moving into Alabama; Slippery Roads/Accidents in Sumter County

| January 16, 2022 @ 5:43 am

Cold air coming around the backside of the surface low this morning, which is located over eastern Alabama, and in the core of the upper low just to its west is allowing the precipitation to change to snow over eastern Mississippi. That is beginning to happen over western Alabama as well.

There have been reports of sleet and snow and slick roads in Sumter County. Chief Vaughn reports that there are accidents on !-20 in Sumter County.

Bursts of heavy snow over Central Mississippi have resulted in some significant accumulations near Jackson:
…7.8 inches reported near Shoccoe in Madison County northeast of Jackson
…6 inches near Goshen Springs in Rankin County
…1.5 inches reports to the west and northwest of Meridian.

The precipitation has changed to snow at both stations in Meridian this hour.

That burst of heavy snow will likely move across the winter weather advisory, which has been expanded to include Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Marengo, Sumter, Bibb, Hale, Perry, Pickens, and Shelby Counties. In this area, up to one inch of snow may accumulate quickly. Some spots may see more than this.

The advisories continue for Blount, Cherokee, Etowah, Marion, Winston, Calhoun, Clay, Cleburne, Fayette, Lamar, Randolph, St. Clair, Talladega, and Walker Counties as well.

Plan on slippery roads to develop quickly as well.

Travel should be limited once the snow begins, which is:

…now in Sumter, Greene, and Hale Counties
…by 7-8 a.m. in Marengo, Perry, Tuscaloosa, and Bibb Counties
…by 9-10 a.m. in Jefferson, Shelby, Walker, Winston, Lamar, Fayette, Pickens, and Marion Counties.
…It will be after 10 a.m. for the advisory counties east of I-65 and into the Tennessee Valley
