Second Tropical Storm Forms in the Atlantic; Two Simultaneous November Storms is Rare Event

| November 1, 2022 @ 10:17 am

Tropical Storm Martin has formed in the far Atlantic well east of Bermuda. The forecast calls for it to become a hurricane on Wednesday before becoming post-tropical over the open waters of the North Atlantic. It will pass well west of the Azores and poses no threat to land.

Dr. Phil Klotzbach highlights the rarity of this occurrence in a Tweet:

Only in two years since the satellite era began in 1966 have we seen two named storms simultaneously in the Atlantic: 2001 (Michelle/Noel), 2020 (Eta/Theta & Theta/Iota).

Martin’s big sister Lisa is getting better organized over the western Caribbean. It has top winds of 50 mph. Air Force Reconnaissance is in the storm right now. Lisa will move into Belize tomorrow evening as a 90 mph hurricane according to the NHC.

Here is the full advisory on Martin:
