Some Weather Fun on A Dreary December Sunday Across Alabama

| December 11, 2022 @ 1:21 pm

Nearly the entire state is socked in with clouds on this second Sunday in December. There might be a little sunshine filtering through in the far southeastern corner of the state down around Dothan, but that’s about it.

Visible satellite imagery shows a mix of high and low clouds streaming across the state.

A little fun fact: look at that darker region on the satellite over western Tennessee…it looks almost like a crease in the photo. Do you know what that might be? It is a shadow cast by the high clouds on the lower stratus deck below.

Time for a little fun with station plots. Here is the current weather over Alabama and surrounding states in the form of a plot from Tim Vasquez’ excellent program Digital Atmosphere.

Can you pick out some of the current weather going on across the region?

Here is a little primer:

Another note, the blue circles and squares indicate Marginal Visual Flight Rule (MVFR) conditions for pilots and the red ones indicate instrument flight rules (IFR).

* MVFR is ceilings 1,000 to 3,000 feet and/or visibility 3-5 miles.
* IFR is ceilings 500 to less than 1,000 feet and/or visibility 1 mile to less than 3 miles

Temperatures are in the 50s over North Alabama, 60s over most of the rest of the state. Andalusia was at 70F.

Radar is busy this afternoon. Showers are heaviest over East Alabama.

I only picked up 0.07″ of rain from the earlier showers.

The showers will diminish over North Alabama by sunset, across Central Alabama overnight, but not be completely out of our southeastern sections until Monday morning.

It looks like there could be a few showers tomorrow across the southern half of Alabama according to the models. Those showers may come back northward Monday night in the form of the warm front. Monday highs will be near 60F over the Tennessee Valley and in the 60s elsewhere.

Will be updating the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. Have that out to you before 2. Have a great afternoon.
