Weather Briefing for New Year’s Day — A Near Perfect Day Today, Once The Fog Lifts

| January 1, 2023 @ 7:05 am

HAPPY NEW YEAR: We’re starting off with dense fog across portions of the area and a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 am this morning for the eastern half of the area and the extreme southern parts. After the fog lifts, skies will become mostly sunny and afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s to the mid 70s.

THE WORK WEEK AHEAD: A developing system will be gaining momentum and will move in our direction on Monday. An impulse ahead of that system will bring a chance of showers and a few claps of thunder mainly to the western half of Central Alabama, with the greatest chances near the AL/MS state line. It will be warm with highs throughout the 70s.

A Slight Risk of severe storms is up for Tuesday as a cold front will move closer and eventually start to move into Central Alabama. The Slight Risk includes locations along and north of a line from Roanoke to Tallassee to just south of Pike Road. The rest of Central Alabama is in a Marginal Risk. All modes of severe weather will be possible during the afternoon and evening hours, and may even extend into the overnight hours. Rain will be heavy at times and some flooding issues may occur. Highs in the upper 60s to the mid 70s.

The front with the shower and thunderstorm activity continues moving through the area on Wednesday morning, but we’ll start to dry out from northwest to southeast starting around the mid-morning hours with rain out of Central Alabama by the late local news. No severe weather, but rain may be heavy at times, especially for the eastern half of the area. Highs in the upper 50s to the lower 70s.

Drier continental air will move in dropping our temperatures and the humidity levels to end off the work week. We’ll have plenty of sun and only a few passing clouds on both days, with Thursday’s highs in the upper 40s to the lower 60s, and Friday’s highs in the upper 40s to the upper 50s.

And at the end of the forecast period on Saturday… Other than being a few degrees warmer, the weather stays the same as we’ll have plenty of sunshine. Highs in the mid 50s to the lower 60s.
