Midday Nowcast: Wet is the Word

| February 2, 2023 @ 9:27 am

A widespread, soaking rain is underway across the state today with rain amounts of 1-2 inches likely by the time the rain comes to an end later tonight. It is rather chilly and the air is stable with temperatures in the 40s and 50s, therefore no severe storms for state. The SPC maintains a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for portions of the Florida Panhandle today, but no part of Alabama is included in the risk. A few storms there could produce gusty winds.

USA BRIEF: The epic ice storm across the South and Mid-South will end today from west to east. A system tracking near the Gulf Coast will clear-out the frozen mess, while also producing heavy rain and perhaps a severe thunderstorm for the Gulf Coast states. Meanwhile, a glancing shot of arctic air will sweep through the Northeastern U.S. on Friday to produce very dangerous wind chills through Saturday.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Dry air returns tomorrow with a mainly sunny sky, and Saturday will feature sunshine in full supply and the same will occur on Sunday. Temperatures tomorrow will be in the 40s, then expect 50s Sunday, followed by some 60s on Sunday. Friday night will be our coldest night with widespread 20s, followed by 30s Saturday night.

NEXT WEEK: Monday and Tuesday look rain-free, but rain and maybe some storms will return around Wednesday/Thursday with a cold front. Drier air returns Friday. Highs much of next week will be above average with 60s and 70s.
