Easter Sunday Morning Update: Clouds for Some, Sun for Others, Warmer for Everyone this Afternoon

For some across Alabama, it is a beautiful morning with Easter egg blue skies and bright sunshine. For others, it is a gray, cloudy morning. Parts of the Tennessee Valley and the I-20 Corridor are the blue sky benefactors this Easter Sunday morning. Everyone else is dealing with a low layer of stratus that will take a little time to burn off in the warm, spring sun. Interestingly, the clouds at the lower levels are being blown from east to west by strong high pressure near Glen Falls, NY. That 1036 mb anticyclone will be providing fine early spring weather for Alabama through midweek.

Temperatures are slightly cooler in the cloudy areas, like 45F at Greenville in Butler County where clouds are thick. Meanwhile, Muscle Shoals is checking in at 56F.

The clouds actually helped keep temperatures warmer during the night, but that insulating blanket is keeping them cooler this morning. Tuscaloosa hovered at 50F overnight. All the other Central Alabama stations were in the 40s.

Sunshine would be increasing throughout the day across the area. High temperatures are destined for the 60s to near 70F today across the area, ranging from 67F in Cullman to 70F in Demopolis. Under fair skies tonight, lows will drop into the 40s again, ranging from the upper 30s in some of the normally colder locations in North Alabama to 45F in the US-80 Corridor.

A sneak peek at the model data this morning still lends good support to the idea that a surface low will form along the Louisiana/Texas coast late Tuesday or Wednesday and move east northeast towards Alabama, bringing rain and some thunder into our state by late Wednesday night and early Thursday. The amounts don’t look too heavy, but we could see a few hours of rainfall. I had said last night that severe weather didn’t appear to be a threat on Thursday, but I may have to take that back. The SPC is mentioning in its their Day 4-8, but has not outlooked any specific area. The GFS model soundings are too looks nd stable for severe weather, but that could change with time. So keep that in the back of your mind.
