The day after one of our colder Christmases looks like we’ll see a bit of a warming trend but our forecast high of 50 will be about 5 degrees below seasonal values for late December. The sun should feel great but it will be somewhat filtered through high clouds.

The upper closed low and the storm system that wreaked havoc with Christmas travel will be winding down as the closed low/trough migrates eastward and the surface low moves into Canada. That will pave the way for several dry days for us, but the strong northwesterly flow aloft will maintain cold air across a large section of the eastern half of the country.

A short wave moving out of the Southern Rockies will develop a surface low in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday into Wednesday which will once again bring rain to the Southeast US. The surface low is forecast to moved east along the Gulf Coast, so much of the rain should be ending by mid-day on Thursday. I think that most of the precipitation will come in the form of rain, however, there is a concern that the precip might start as sleet or freezing rain. It’s a little too early to pronounce specifics on that, but it will need to be watched. And the precip might end as a little light snow Thursday night/Friday morning. Again, too early to be very specific and it certainly does not appear to be a major problem.

Rainfall amounts for the Wednesday/Thursday time frame will likely be in the half to one inch range with higher amounts over the southern portions of Alabama and along the Gulf Coast.

We dry out into the weekend and the first of 2010 but it looks like the cold remains with temperatures below seasonal values.

Looking further into voodoo country, and the progression of storm systems just keeps rolling along as the southern stream remains very active. It just seems highly likely that one of these will catch us with some wintery weather, but conditions have to be just right for Central Alabama to get snow.
