Bolide Over Alabama Tonight

| August 10, 2023 @ 10:12 pm

From Chris Tate at Jefferson County EMA:

FYI, Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, and Shelby County EMAs all had varying reports of a “airplane on fire” tonight. After talking to Birmingham ATC and other local airports, they had no reports of any aircraft declaring an emergency, nor did they have any aircraft deviating from instruction. BHM ATC did say they had an aircraft in Bibb County who either said they saw something similar to our calls or had been requested to circle around an area but did not find anything on fire on the ground. I also spoke to the AFRCC (Air Force Rescue Coordination Center) to see if they had any active beacons or reports of missing aircraft. They have neither in Alabama at this time.

There are also widespread reports and video now circulating of a meteor over FL AL.

Just wanted to put that out to everyone in the event of further calls.

Turns out it may have been space debris. The image is courtesy of our friend Brad Panovich in NC.
