Early (Very Early) Thursday in Alabama
Temperatures were already below freezing over all of Alabama late
tonight and very early on this Thursday morning–but not as cold as last night. They were not expected to be.
We are between two arctic invasions.
Also missing in action is precipitation. But that will change. The
nearest to Alabama is over West Mississippi. We may see some scattered
light sleet or light snow on Alabama’s western border by daybreak.
No change in our thinking for Central Alabama including the Birmingham
area. We are still calling for a possible snow accumulation of 1 to 2
inches as the day goes on most of it during the afternoon and evening.
Infrastructure is thoroughly chilled so it will not take long for the
snow to start sticking. There could be some travel problems especially
on bridges and overpasses and elevated roadways. Caution is advised
but, with a little luck, we could get by without serious problems for
the Thursday morning Drive (Rush hour)
Another big supply of very cold air will overspread Alabama tonight
(Thursday night) and by daybreak Friday, we will be in the teens. A
few lingering snow flurries Friday morning. We should remain below
freezing all day Friday as well as all of Saturday. By Saturday
morning and Sunday morning, we look for low temperatures around 8 to
10 and a wind chill below zero.
So this second invasion of arctic air is very serious and could be
life-threatening to the elderly who may live along with poorly-heated
The central pressure in that big arctic high near the Canada-Montana border has built to as much as 1054 millibars! (Translation, a very strong high pressure area)
homes. We will be on watch!
