Midday Nowcast: Cold Despite Abundant Sunshine

The clouds and showers from yesterday are out of here, and we are seeing sunshine in full supply across Alabama today. Despite the sunshine, it is much colder with highs in the 40s and 50s this afternoon. Factor in that north breeze, it is feeling even chillier out there…grab the jacket out the door for sure. Tonight a freeze is expected across all of North and Central Alabama tonight with lows in the 25-32 degree range early tomorrow. Protect those pipes and pets!!!

THROUGH THURSDAY: Plenty of sunshine will highlight the forecast the next three days, but it will remain chilly. Highs tomorrow will again struggle to reach the low 50s, but Wednesday and Thursday should see highs at least in the upper 50s. Wednesday morning will be a few degrees colder than tomorrow, and we are forecasting low to mid 20s for the northern half of the state. Late Thursday, clouds begin to increase and we should see rain return to Alabama Thursday night.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The weather will be unsettled with several waves of beneficial rain and possible thunderstorms. At the moment it looks like rain on Friday is most likely during the morning hours, followed by a break late Friday afternoon and Friday night. The high Friday will be in the 60s. For the weekend, we will forecast periods of rain and a few thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday with highs holding in the 60s. A few strong storms can’t be ruled out Sunday, but for now the severe weather risk looks low. Much needed rain is expected Friday through Sunday, with amounts around 2 inches for North Alabama. The southern counties have potential for 2-4 inches and is very good news for a state that still is experiencing drought conditions.

NEXT WEEK: For now, a relatively quiet and seasonable week of weather is expected with highs in the 50s and 60s, and lows mainly in the 40s.
