Midday Nowcast: Sun, Clouds, and Dry Through Saturday

Little change in the forecast today, tomorrow, and Saturday with more sunshine than clouds. The mornings remain cold, with lower 30s tomorrow and upper 30s Saturday morning, but we continue to see milder afternoons with mid to upper 50s today, followed by low 60s tomorrow and Friday. It will remain dry through Saturday across Alabama.

FINAL HOURS OF FALL: Even though we are dealing with winter temperatures, it is still officially fall. However, the winter solstice occurs tonight at 9:27PM CST. This is when it officially become winter for the northern hemisphere as the sun it directly over the Tropic os Capricorn, latitude 23.5°S. Today is the day with the least amount of daylight for us, and the day with the lowest sun angle. It is also means tonight will be the longest night of the year across the Northern Hemisphere.

ACROSS THE USA: A slow-moving storm system will bring more heavy rainfall to Southern California until Friday, creating a risk of additional flooding in the region. The same system could also cause heavy rainfall in parts of the Southwest, where flood watches are in effect. In the Northeast, river levels remain high and flooding is expected to persist throughout the week. Quiet weather continues for the east.

WET CHRISTMAS: Scattered rain will return for Christmas Eve, with the more widespread rain arriving Sunday night and through the day Christmas Day on Monday. It won’t rain all night Sunday night or all day Monday, but periods of rain are likely with some potential for thunder in spots. No severe storms are expected. Highs will likely be in the upper 50s and low 60s. Rainfall amounts will be around one inch for the northern half of the state.

REST OF 2023: The rain will come to an end during the day Tuesday. The weather will be dry for the rest of the week with a cooling trend; highs will be in the 50s Wednesday through Friday, with lows in the 30s. The days should feature more sunshine than clouds.
