Sunday Briefing — ’23 Ends on a Dry Note; A Couple of Shots for Rain Later This Week

| December 31, 2023 @ 6:57 am

Whether this year has been a good one or a bad one to you, at least it will be nice to us as it makes its exit. It will be warmer and brighter than Saturday as we’ll have mostly sunny skies across Central Alabama today, with highs reaching the upper 50s to the lower 60s. Clouds will begin to increase this evening, but don’t let that bring any worry into your New Year’s plans. No rain tonight and temperatures at midnight will be in the upper 30s to the lower 40s.

New Year’s Day is now looking to be a dry day as models have decreased the available moisture with the cold front that will move through during the day. Skies will be mostly sunny, but it will be a little breezy at times with highs in the upper 40s to the lower 60s from north to south.

Tuesday will be another dry and bright day across the area, but we start to see the next system start to get its act together out to the west of us. Clouds will begin to increase during the evening, but we’ll remain dry through midnight. Highs in the upper 40s to the mid 50s.

We’ll get another reinforcing shot of cooler air in here on Wednesday as that system will move through the area. It will also bring us a chance of showers during the afternoon and evening. The better rain chances, however, will be over the Gulf Coast. Highs in the mid 40s to the lower 50s.

We’re back to bright and sunny conditions for Thursday after the system passage, but the cooler weather sticks with us. Highs in the mid 40s to the mid 50s.

Friday will be slightly warmer underneath sunny skies through much of the daylight hours. However, clouds will begin to move in during the evening, and we’ll have the possibility of a few showers through the night. Highs in the lower to mid 50s.

It’s a good news/bad news deal for the end of the forecast period on Saturday. The bad news is that rain will be likely throughout the day as a surface low will move along the Gulf Coast area pumping plenty of Gulf moisture up into Central Alabama. For now, it looks like it may be a washout for the day. The good news is that the rain will be beneficial toward our drought conditions. Either way you look at it, we’re getting rain. Some thunder will be possible over the southern parts of the state, but for Central Alabama, the air will be stable. Highs in the mid 40s to the upper 50s.
