Mid-Afternoon Update

Sure looks more and more like most of the serious convection this afternoon will be confined to the northeast corner of Alabama. Some respectable showers and storms have formed in a band from near Piedmont north to Weiss Lake; this are moving east, and should into Georgia by 4:30. To the north, tornado warnings were issued earlier for the Chattanooga metro area earlier, but no reports of damage.

SPC has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of Middle and East Tennessee until 9:00 p.m. CST, but that watch will not include any Alabama counties. This watch replaces the tornado watch issued earlier.

A few showers are seen over Northwest Alabama, but the dewpoint at Muscle Shoals is only 52.

Birmingham is showing a dewpoint of 56 at 3:00, and based on the southwest wind here, it sure looks like the chance of storms for the Birmingham metro is rather small for the next couple of hours.

BOTTOM LINE: The best chance of storms this afternoon will be in the general area from Anniston to Fort Payne, and some of those could be locally severe, but the severe weather threat should be over by 6:00 as the storms move out of the state. And, with the lack of high dewpoints and surface based CAPE, the threat looks rather minimal for now. Great news…
