Freezing Rain Now in Birmingham Metro Area

Wintry precipitation is now falling in the Birmingham Metro area.

Bridges will begin to ice quickly with temperatures at 29-30F. Another big problem is that car windshields freeze instantly when supercooled rain falls. Please stay off the roads

Here is the radar at this hour. The echos in red are freezing rain, sleet, and some snow.

Melissa Sizemore reports rain freezing on contact in Helena with a light glaze already on sidewalks and elevated surfaces. Roads are wet. Her weather station is reporting a temperature of 30F.

Jordan Fletcher reports light freezing rain in Chelsea on Highway 280 at AL 41. Cars are starting to glaze over.

Bount County EMA reports most roads in Blount County are impassable.

John Talbot reported freezing rain in Hueytown at 10:25.

We are starting to see power line icing in Jackson County in Northeast Alabama in the Stevenson area. 89 customers without power in their Co-op.

The NWS in Birmingham has issued a Wind Chill Advisory through Noon Tuesday for Marion, Winston, Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Jefferson, Blount, Etowah, Cherokee, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Sumter, Greene, Hale, and Marengo Counties. Dangerously cold wind chills will range from below zero to the single digits.
