Sunday Weather Video: Colder Today

Much cooler air moved into Alabama overnight behind a strong cold front that brought a morning wave of widespread rain and some thunder and an afternoon band of convection that produced heavy showers as it moved across the state during the afternoon. Fortunately, severe weather was not able to materialize in the state.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: We are starting in the 30s across the northern third of the area this morning, with 40s further south. Clouds are hanging tough this morning across much of Alabama, and that will remain the case through the day, with clearing commencing in earnest tonight. We can’t rule out a few sprinkles to a little light rain today. Highs today will be in the 40s over the northern half of the state, with 50s over the southern half of the area. Lows tonight under those clearing skies will be in the lower 30s across the Tennessee Valley and the middle 30s in North Central Alabama. South Alabama will see lows in the middle and upper 30s.

NEW WORK WEEK: Ridging will build over much of the United States early in the week, but a disturbance will slide out of the Great Lakes and into the Southeast Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. This could bring a few showers to the northeastern part of Alabama late Tuesday night into early Wednesday. Looks like we will stay dry through the remainder of the work week. Temperatures will be in the 50s on Monday, near 60F on Tuesday, with 50s on Wednesday and Thursday, and then upper 50s to lower 60s on Friday.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Weather systems will converge on Alabama by Saturday, but we will stay mostly dry across North and Central Alabama as a southern stream disturbance slides by to our south. Weekend highs will be in the lower 60s on Saturday, falling back into the 50s on Sunday and into week two.

SPEAKING OF THAT WEEK TWO VOODOO: High pressure dominates the weather scene across much of the eastern United States through midweek of week two. A system will produce prodigious rains to the west of Alabama late in the week, but it should weaken when it slides into Alabama on Friday. It looks like two other wet weather systems may move through the state, the first on Saturday and the second on Tuesday the 14th. Week two starts off cooler than normal again, with highs in the 40s next Sunday and Monday.

BEACHCAST: A cool but dry week is ahead of the beautiful beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida. Highs will be in the 50s and 60s all week. Lows will be in the 30s and 40s. Water temperatures are in the upper 50s. There will be a low to moderate rip current risk in the days ahead.

DANCING WITH THE STATS: Washington, D.C. recorded a high of 80F on Friday, which was a record for the month of January. It was quite a turnaround from an especially cold period earlier in the month which saw a week of highs in the 20s and 30s and 7.8 inches of snow.
