The southern stream in our atmospheric flow remains active and it appears likely it will remain active through much of the upcoming couple of weeks. Today we should see some sun by afternoon as the clouds break up. However it will still be chilly with highs a good 6 to 8 degrees below values we typically expect for early February with highs in the mid and upper 40s. Monday will be predominantly dry as we brace for the impact of the next system headed our way.

That system will create havoc across the Central US with a large area of the country already under some type of weather advisory, watch, or warning as they get clobbered by snow. For us it should be another wet time for the first half of Tuesday with the rain expected to end during the afternoon across Central Alabama. This will be another one of those raw days with temperatures changing little and remaining in the 40s.

Wednesday and Thursday should be dry abut still somewhat chilly as afternoon highs remain below average. The next system takes shape Thursday bringing us precipitation on Friday. The GFS has pushed the surface low a bit further south, but it still looks like a rain and snow combination for the Southeast US including the northern half of Alabama. The GFS remains fairly consistent on this so that helps with the confidence factor. However, the details on exactly where snow will occur and how much will not be known for several days yet. But this system bears careful watching as I noted yesterday. For the Southeast US, the atmospheric recipe for snow requires just the right ingredients come together – something we cannot tell 5 or 6 days out. We can say it looks promising, but don’t raise your hopes too high just yet.

By the way, Miami will be in the upper 60s this afternoon with temperatures dropping into the upper 50s toward the end of Super Bowl XLIV!

The Friday system zips on by clearing the way for a dry but chilly weekend. And the longer range model guidance continued to show an active pattern with a steady stream of storm systems to keep us busy!

Yup, running a tad late this morning. That’s because I stayed up too late last night! Good luck to the Saints in the Super Bowl this evening. I’ll be cheering them on as I munch my chips and dip! Thanks for watching. James Spann will be back with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video first thing Monday morning. I hope you have a great day and Godspeed.
