Alabama Weather Summary: Sunday Sunshine

| August 11, 2024 @ 1:14 pm

CURRENT CONDITIONS
As of 1:00 PM CDT, skies are clear across most of Alabama, with only a few clouds observed in the extreme southeastern portion of the state and over parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties near the coast. Temperatures are generally warm, ranging from the upper 80s to low 90s, with dewpoints in the 60s, contributing to relatively comfortable humidity levels. Notably, Muscle Shoals and Tuscaloosa are reporting clear skies and temperatures in the upper 80s, while Birmingham is observing mostly sunny conditions with a temperature of 86°F. The northerly wind flow continues to bring dry air across the state, keeping conditions pleasant.

SHORT TERM OUTLOOK (Through Monday)
High pressure will remain dominant over the region, maintaining clear skies and comfortable conditions through Monday. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s to low 90s, with overnight lows in the 60s. The clear skies and dry air will persist, making for another pleasant night with minimal cloud cover. A few high clouds may start to move in later tonight, but no significant weather is expected.

MIDWEEK WEATHER TRENDS
As we move into midweek, a deep-layer ridge will shift eastward from Texas, bringing height rises and warmer temperatures. By Tuesday, temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s across much of the state. However, this heat will be accompanied by an increase in moisture, setting the stage for potential showers and thunderstorms by Wednesday. A Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) could move into Alabama from the northwest on Wednesday, increasing rain chances to around 30% across the area. This pattern is expected to persist through the latter part of the week.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK (Thursday through Saturday)
The overall weather pattern will remain somewhat unsettled from Thursday through Saturday as the ridge retreats slightly to the west. This will allow for continued opportunities for MCS activity and scattered showers and thunderstorms each day, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures will remain in the low to mid-90s, with increased humidity making it feel even warmer.

DON’T MISS THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER
Tonight offers a great opportunity to catch the peak of the Perseid meteor shower under mostly clear skies across Alabama. The best viewing times are after midnight, with dozens of meteors visible per hour in dark locations away from city lights. Be sure to find a spot with a wide-open view of the sky, and let your eyes adjust to the darkness for the best experience. The Perseids are one of the most popular meteor showers of the year, so take advantage of the clear skies to enjoy the celestial show.
