Midday Nowcast: Fantastic Friday; Hot Weather Returns Next Week

GREAT WEATHER THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The pattern is not changing much, so like today, the weekend looks great. It will be generally dry with only isolated showers. Highs will be mostly in the upper 80s to low 90s all three days, with the lower humidity levels it will remain tolerable for late August. That also means morning lows will remain the 60s.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: For the first high school games of the season tonight, the sky will be mostly clear with temperatures falling from the mid 80s at kickoff, into the 70s by the second half.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For August 23rd, the average high for Birmingham is 90° and the average low is 71°. The record high is 105° set in 2007, while the record low is 54° set in 1950. We average 0.14” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 1.65” set in 1901.

ACROSS THE USA: The ongoing heat wave with high temperatures in the upper 90s and triple digits will remain over the Southern Plains into Saturday likely breaking several additional daily records. Tropical Storm Hone will pass south of the Hawaiian Islands this weekend strengthening into a Hurricane briefly southwest of Hawaii late Sunday into Monday. A Tropical Storm Watch and Flood Watch have been issued.

NEXT WEEK: Heat levels rise, as an upper-ridge build in over the Deep South. Afternoon temperatures likely climb back into the upper 90s to low 100s next week. And, the pattern continues to look dry with only isolated showers and storms on a daily basis.

IN THE TROPICS: All is quiet for now, but it won’t last has we are now entering the heart of hurricane season, which statistically peaks on September 10th.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 120.0F at Kerbela, Iraq. The lowest observation was -90.8F at Vostok, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 113F at Del Rio, Sweetwater, and Rio Grande Village, TX. The lowest observation was 31F at Davis, WV.
