An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS AFTERNOON: Birmingham is reporting 45 degrees at 2:00 with a dewpoint of 8… we note that is 15 degrees below the average high of 60 degrees for February 25. Some spots up north are still in the 30s; Haleyville is at 39 degrees at 2:00. At least the sun is shining brightly, taking the edge off the chilly air. We will be cold again tonight with lows down in the low to mid 20s. Some of the normally colder spots could reach the teens again.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Our next wave, the one we affectionately call Bertha, will pass well to the south tomorrow night and Saturday morning. It could bring some clouds, but the precipitation will stay over far South Alabama and the Gulf of Mexico, and we will leave our forecast dry through Sunday. Afternoon highs will be generally in the 50 to 55 degree range each afternoon, with early morning temperatures below the freezing mark.

CLARENCE/NEXT WEEK: Next week, the wave we have named Clarence will spin up a surface low in the Gulf of Mexico Monday night. The 12Z GFS continues the idea of the system passing far to the south with no impact here. The ECMWF has trended a little to the south, but you can’t ignore the Canadian GEM, which portrays a nice snow event for North Alabama Tuesday. No ability to forecast this event yet; I still think it has great potential to bring significant amounts of rain and snow to the Southeast U.S… but we don’t know who gets the rain and who gets the snow. Watch the Weather Xtreme video for details… we will continue to wait and watch.

LONG RANGE: The operational 12Z GFS still looks pretty cold into mid-March, but with the AO trending positive, you have to figure there will be a general trend toward warmer weather. Of course, the longer amount of daylight and better sun angle means that has to happen at some point.

LIVE CHAT: We are now offering a real time chat here on the blog… open blog comments will stay in place, of course, but this will allow a more immediate method of communication for weather geeks. We do have moderators posted over there, so be sure and play nice. Members of our weather team will be there from time to time to answer questions; we will post those times we are available here on the blog.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

We had a great time today seeing the students at Hudson School in Collegeville (in the northern part of Birmingham)… doing a special Storm Alert 2010 show just for them. Be looking for them on the Pepsi KIDCAM today at 5:00 on ABC 33/40 News. I will have the next Weather Xtreme video here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow….
