Early Evening Alabama–6:50 Report

| March 1, 2010 @ 6:48 pm | 57 Replies

Rain has spread into Alabama this evening–part of the overall storm system that will affect the state tonight and Tuesday and even some snow for some parts of the state. At 6:50 p.m., the heaviest rain was over SW Alabama, but there was some moderate to heavy rain in West Alabama, including Hale, Bibb and South Tuscaloosa Counties as well as Dallas County. Some of the heaviest rain extends back into Central and South Mississippi.

Light rain has spread as far east as parts of Jefferson County. It was 44 degrees with light rain in Concord/Hueytown and light rain just started in Bluff Park. Coker, in Tuscaloosa County, reported 0.11 and Tuscaloosa Airport 0.02.

But the heaviest rain amount so far includes 0.75 at Mobile Regional Airport and 0.63 at Brookley Field in Mobile.

A 6:00pm Surface Analysis shows that our low-pressure area of interest continues to deepen and it was centered just south of the Louisiana coast.

So far, we have not received any precipitation reports other than just rain. By daybreak we may be seeing some sleet mixed in with the rain and even some snow.

It still looks like the better chance of getting any accumulating snow will be over East/Central and NE Alabama, especially the higher terrain where there may be accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. A Winter Weather Advisory continues for Jeffersona and Shelby Counties.

MORNING DRIVE
It is more commonly known as morning rush hour. We do not believe there will be any travel problems at that time tomorrow morning because the temperatures will be several degrees above freezing, maybe even in the mid to upper 30s, but we will watch carefully.
