Waiting and Watching

A few notes from the forecast office…

*Looks like a gravity wave is moving along the Gulf Coast. Winds at the Pensacola Naval Air Station just gusted to 53 knots, or 61 miles per hour. These high winds should stay near the coast during the next couple of hours.

*Dynamic cooling is showing up over East Mississippi. We note the Naval Air Station at Meridian, MS has dropped to 39 degrees, and an observer at Philadelphia is reporting 35 now. The cold core upper low is still over East Texas, so the cooling process will continue overnight, as expected.

*A quick review of the 00Z model set shows our ongoing forecast seems to be on track; the best chance of 1 to 3 inches of snow will be over East-Central and Northeast Alabama, mostly in grassy areas. Roads should be mostly wet, and major driving problems are not expected due to the snow.

*I have to wonder if Cheaha State Park will see over 5 inches of snow tomorrow. It will be fun to watch our SKYCAM up there during the day. Sure wish I was there in a cabin or chalet.

*I do believe snow will fall over West Alabama tomorrow morning, but confidence in getting much on the ground is not especially good now, but we will need to watch overnight radar trends.

*I will be shocked if we get through this without at least one or two significant surprises. I recommend you get up extra early tomorrow and check the blog for the latest before you head out for work or school. There will be those that are delighted with the amount of snow they get tomorrow, and others severely disappointed.

Again, our snow forecast is below…
