Run For Your Life–Kudzu Coming!

Too bad, Mr. Kudzu, that we cannot give you a speeding ticket. You seem to ignore all traffic regulations. You simply go wild during the spring and summer–taking over thousands of acres of additional countryside.

Every time I drive across one of my favorite highways, Deerfoot Parkway, in NE Jefferson County, I can see how you have spoiled some great scenic vistas.

You were invited to the good ole USA many, many years ago in hopes of slowing or stopping erosion of farm land in the southern states.

You did help with that but you became greedy and over ambitious and draped everything in sight. I once saw a farm house in Hale county where you had covered the whole building, roof and all.

You have now been spotted in as far-away places as New England and the Pacific Northwest. What is your game plan? Are trying to turn the entire USA into a mantel of green?

Fortunately, we have one tool to at least slow you down–a long cold winter. You turn into an ugly gray mantle during those months. But we know you will be ready to go again soon as it gets warmer and warmer.
