Thursday Drought Update: Slight Improvements This Week, Soaking Rain Tomorrow Will Help!

| January 16, 2025 @ 10:14 am

Compared to last week, there were some slight improvements in the drought thanks to the winter storm we saw late last week. A large portion of the state remains in either abnormally dry conditions or a moderate drought, with a few pockets of severe drought still evident. While the area in a severe drought has not changed, the area in  moderate drought conditions has shrunk by about 3% since last week.

Another storm system will bring a widespread soaking rain to the deep south Friday into Saturday. Most areas of Alabama should pick up at least 1-2″ of rain from this, with isolated higher amounts mainly over SE Alabama. This should certainly make at least a small dent in the ongoing drought conditions across the state, although it likely will take a few more rain evens of this size to completely eliminate it.
