Strong Storms Over West Alabama

| March 13, 2025 @ 8:24 am

Scattered strong thunderstorms are moving across the state this morning, with some already producing small hail and gusty winds. A storm in Tuscaloosa County has brought half-inch hail as it tracks east at 30 mph, while another cluster of storms in Marion and Lamar Counties has produced pea-size hail.

The main concern today is the potential for storms to intensify through the afternoon as temperatures climb into the mid to upper 70s, increasing instability. A marginal risk (1/5) for severe weather remains in place across the area, with the strongest storms capable of producing large hail—possibly up to golf ball size—along with isolated damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.

A key feature to watch is a boundary currently moving across Mississippi, which could enhance storm development as it reaches Alabama later this morning. The most widespread storms are expected to develop across the southern half of the state this afternoon, where additional surface heating and increasing moisture will provide better fuel for stronger updrafts. While coverage may not be as widespread as initially expected, any storms that do form will have the potential to produce severe weather.

Storms will continue off and on over the next few days as multiple upper-level disturbances pass through the region. Another round of stronger storms is possible on Friday, with a more significant storm system expected to arrive by the weekend, bringing an increased risk of severe weather from Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

Stay weather-aware, especially if traveling or participating in outdoor activities. Keep an eye on alerts and be prepared to move indoors if storms approach.
