Okay, Spring officially began yesterday a little after noon, so today is the first official day of Spring! But it is certainly not going to feel like it. With lots of clouds, off and on rain, and temperatures holding pretty much in the 50s – that’s about 10 degrees below where we ought to be for this time of year – it is going to feel somewhat raw out there. Plus we had two glorious days with highs in the 70s which just makes the weather today feel that much worse! But take heart, this chill down should be short lived.

Our rain today and Monday should amount to about one half to one inch especially across the northern half of Alabama.

The culprit in all of this is a cold core upper low that was positioned over the Arklatex this morning and is expected to move east-northeast to a spot over East Tennessee by tomorrow at mid day. The surface low was situated in the vicinity of Memphis and will be moving northeast today and tonight toward the Mid-Atlantic states.

So Monday will be an interesting day with light precipitation possible and with the cold core nature of the upper low perhaps a little light snow or snow flurries. But don’t make too much out of this because it is not likely to produce any significant snow.

We come under a ridge toward midweek and we warm up, too. By Wednesday we should be back under a ridge with temperatures warming back above the 70-degree mark.

A weak short wave in the upper atmosphere will bring some scattered showers or patchy light rain to the area Thursday and Friday. We should see a dry Saturday before the next system begins to impact us on Sunday. So the overall weather pattern remains very active.

Looking into voodoo country, the huge system that I mentioned yesterday has changed much as you might expect when looking out that far. The GFS is now suggesting that the ridge will be quite strong keeping the strong system off to our northwest. I will not be surprised to see this change again – maybe several times – before we get to early April.
