Alabama at 10:45 am Monday

It is a cloudy cold morning across Alabama–a 180 degeree turn-around from Friday and Saturday Weather.

At 10:30 am, radar indicated a solid area of precipitation from about the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham area northward to the Tennessee Valley.

In the winter mosaic setting, radar indicates wintry precipitation over the NE corner of Alabama. However, it is likely mixed precipitation over the higher elevations over NE Alabama especially atop ridges like sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain.

Morning upper air analysis shows that the upper low is centered over NE Alabama possible over the Gadsden-Guntersville area. It is very cold aloft. For example, upper soundings at 7 am showed the temperature at -30C over BHM at the 500 millibar level compared to -19C at Little Rock. 500MB is at about 18,000 feet but the very cold air is also at levels much lower than that. The freezing level over BHM was about 3,000 feet, maybe a bit lower.

Because of the circulation around the low, precipitation is spreading SE into North Alabama, then curving east and finally toward the NE.
