Tropical Depression Three Forms Off Southeast Coast
Tropical Depression Three has formed about 150 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, and is drifting slowly north at just 2 mph. The system is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by Saturday as it approaches the Carolina coast, likely making landfall near the South Carolina coast on Sunday morning. Tropical Storm Watches are now in effect from Edisto Beach to Little River Inlet, where tropical storm conditions are possible by late Saturday.
Winds are currently sustained at 35 mph, and while only modest strengthening is anticipated, the main concern is flooding. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches, may cause flash flooding in parts of the Carolinas this weekend. In addition to heavy rain, rough surf and rip currents are likely along the beaches, with a minor storm surge of 1 to 2 feet possible in onshore flow areas.
The National Hurricane Center expects the system to weaken quickly after landfall and dissipate over land early next week. Residents along the southeast U.S. coast should monitor forecasts closely and prepare for potential impacts from heavy rain, gusty winds, and dangerous coastal conditions.
