Red Mountain Theatre presents ‘Waitress’
Inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s beloved film, the Tony-nominated musical “Waitress” offers a special recipe for finding happiness in unexpected places. Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. Faced with an unexpected pregnancy, Jenna fears she may have to abandon the dream of opening her own pie shop … until a baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s handsome new doctor offer her a tempting recipe for happiness. Supported by her quirky crew of fellow servers and loyal customers, Jenna summons the secret ingredient she’s been missing all along — courage. “Waitress” starts Friday, July 18.
Birmingham Museum of Art
The Birmingham Museum of Art presents Silver & Ceremony from Southern Asia, 1830-1930, an exhibition featuring the collection of Harish K. Patel. The exhibition is on view through Sunday, Nov. 30. The exhibition includes more than 150 suites of silver and explores how silver served as both a decorative art and a catalyst for cultural transformation during a period of rapid global change.
W.C. Handy Music Festival
The annual W.C. Handy Music Festival is underway through Sunday, July 27 with multi-day events taking place at The Shoals including Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals. The late musician and songwriter became the “Father of the Blues” after he wrote “Memphis Blues” in 1912. The Florence native was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1993.
