Weather by the Numbers–Agriculture
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Alabama Field Office, Montgomery released these numbers today They issue this information weekly.
* 48% of the Alabama corn crop has been planted as compared to 39% at this time last year.
* 8% of the corn crop is up as compared to 21% at this time last year.
* 1% of the cotton crop has been planted.
* 62% of the corn crop that is up is in fair to poor condition
* 92 percent of the pasture and range land in Alabama is in good to fair condition and 6% is excellent. A mere 2% is rated poor. That is a vast improvement over our recent drought times.
* 88% of the land area has adequate top soil moisture including 12% with excess moisture (too wet) Only 12% of the state has short top soil moisture.
* 74% of Alabama is drought free compared to 100% three months ago and also 100% one year ago. The SE Corner of Alabama is getting dry.
* 83% is how much the 2010 rain amount Anniston Airport has received so far.
* 16.59 inches is the Guntersville rain total so far in 2010, a shortfall of only 1.29 inches. Russellville, in NW Alabama has a 13.34 inch shortfall so far this year.
