Sitting in Mitchell, SD, this morning preparing the Weather Xtreme Video from a point a long way from Central Alabama. Weather fine here and it looks good for Central Alabama today, too, as temperatures drop back about 10 degrees from recent days. The cooler air is thanks to a surface front that sagged through the area yesterday and last night. In the upper atmosphere, general troughiness exists across the eastern US. That will help with rain chances on Monday and Tuesday as weak short waves travel through the weak northwesterly flow. This will enhance chances for some scattered showers on Monday and Tuesday but certainly not the kind of event that will give everyone some rain.

A ridge builds into the Southeast at mid-week as a new strong closed low comes into the Southwest US. That closed low will eject to the northeast around Friday becoming an open trough and dragging a front into Alabama in the Friday/Saturday time frame. That will be our next really good chance at some widespread rain.

Temperatures will recover to the 80 degree mark around Thursday before clouds and that next frontal system bring a slight cool down. While we need the rain, no one likes rain on a weekend, but it does appear likely right now that the weather will improve on Sunday as the rain shifts eastward.

Looking further afield, the GFS paints a relative flattening of the overall pattern around the end of April before we see more traveling weather system at the first of May.

Big day today as my daughter and I finally arrive in Southwest South Dakota and the Mt. Rushmore area. Minnesota was really flat but the land turned to more rolling terrain as we got into South Dakota yesterday afternoon. Got a great room at Mitchell, SD, and then took a quick tour of the historic downtown area including the Corn Palace. We were not able to go inside since there appeared to be a formal affair going on there. But we got pictures that we’ll post later. Had a great meal and wonderful service at the Whiskey Creek restaurant just down the street from the hotel. It’s very exciting to see country we’ve never seen before. I hope that you have a great day. Godspeed.
