More Than One Tornado Alley

WeatherBrains listener Wallace Williams pointed out an interesting article on Sciencenews.org last week.

The author of the paper is Michael Frates, a Graduate Student in the Department of Geography at The University of Akron in Ohio. Will be getting his Masters in a couple of weeks.

The article talks about the paper he presented at the Association of American Geographers on April 15th about tornado alleys. We have always heard about the legendary Tornado Alley across the plains, but we have recently found that there is a second tornado alley across the South.

Michael goes even further than that in his paper, proving that Dixie Alley is actually more prolific than the traditional Tornado Alley. He also found two other areas of tornado concentration. about not only Tornado Alley and Dixie Alley, but two additional preferred areas for major tornadoes across the country.

Michael will be a guest during my pick on WeatherBrains this week. The show will be available for download late Tuesday night.
