It sure looks like the front I spoke about yesterday will make its way through Alabama today ushering in some slightly drier air. Dew points dropping into the 50s will feel mighty nice even if the temperatures don’t change much. The front should make it all the way to the Gulf coast bringing Central Alabama a couple of days of dry weather where we can take the mention of showers out of the forecast.

The drier air comes about as an upper trough drops in along the Atlantic Coast bringing northwesterly flow to much of the eastern third of the country. That trough and the associated northwesterly flow do not last long, though, and we will be returning to scattered showers and thunderstorms by Wednesday. That air mass along with a strengthening ridge aloft will keep showers in the forecast through the end of the week and into the weekend. The strong upper ridge will also result in turning up the heat with highs in the lower and mid 90s for the end of the week.

Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe storms along and just ahead of the front from New England down to Central Tennessee. SPC really nailed the episode of severe with the moderate risk we noted yesterday morning. A number of large tornadoes were reported across Illinois and Indiana which resulted in lots of damage and at least two deaths.

Rainfall for the next five days will be at somewhat of a minimum with scattered showers.

Long range projections suggest little change to the overall pattern with the westerlies well to our north and general ridging across the southern tier of the US. That translates simply to daily scattered showers.
