RIGHT NOW: Here are some 3:00 temperatures across Alabama…

Birmingham 91
Tuscaloosa 92
Anniston 91
Gadsden 91

Birmingham’s dewpoint is 69, making the relative humidity at 48 percent. The heat index is 96. Sure, it is hot, but not as hot as recent days. Still, this is the 23rd consecutive day with a high of 90 or hotter. Showers are very hard to find on radar at mid-afternoon.

REST OF THE WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: Trying to forecast day to day changes in summer is almost impossible far in advance since the heat levels and coverage of afternoon storms is determined by small scale changes in atmospheric structure we simply can’t identify more than 24 hours out. Bottom line is that highs will remain in the 90s, and each day there will be some risk of a passing shower or storm in scattered spots. Drier air is expected to slip in here Friday and Saturday, with a slow increase in moisture by Sunday and Monday.

The 12Z GFS has the core of the heat bubble centered a little west of Alabama over the weekend and through much of next week, so hopefully the hottest temperatures will be there as well. Top soil moisture remains in pretty good shape, so that should also help the heat from really running away from us into the triple digits.

TROPICS: A fairly decent tropical wave has emerged off the coast of Africa, but no sign of any organization at this point, and the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet other than a few waves in the low latitudes.
