As expected, most of the showers were confined to South Alabama yesterday. Today I expect to see a nearly perfect photocopy of yesterday as showers will remain to our south for the most part with only an isolated shower or two in North or Central Alabama. Temperatures are likely to climb a tad as the upper ridge builds back across the Southeast US. Birmingham hit 96 yesterday and I think we’ll see 96 to 98 today.

With the upper ridge – the “energizer” ridge – back in place through about Wednesday, temperatures will climb slowly toward the 100-degree mark with heat indices from 105 to 110. By Wednesday, though, we begin to see some changes which should bring the eastern half of the country some relief from the excessive heat. A trough sets up over the eastern third of the country with the ridge pushed back to the four corners area. This will bring our heights down about 60 meters or so which should limit highs to the middle 90s. Not as much relief as we’d like, but something at least.

The development of the eastern US trough means a weak front could get into the area late in the upcoming week, so it appears that our best shot at something more than isolated storms could come around Friday, August 13th. This might linger into Saturday but much of next weekend could be back in the isolated shower possibility.

Storm Prediction Center keeps a slight risk well to our north on Day 1 and 2 as the westerlies remain there for the next several days.

Hurricane Center watching three spots. Colin still not doing well as it slips by Bermuda. Area in South Central Atlantic still has potential but looks more ragged today than yesterday. Western Caribbean showers over land for now. And in the Pacific is Estelle and she’s circulating without much direction.

Voodoo country suggests that the “energizer” ridge will return, so we are not completely out of the heat just yet!
