The National Hurricane Center has christened the disturbance in the Atlantic Tropical Depression Six. It is a little less than 600 miles west southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. It is moving WNW at 9 mph. Top winds are 30 mph.

The system is expected to intensify into a hurricane over the next few days. It should turn northwest, exploiting a weakness in the subtropical high pressure ridge over the Atlantic. This is the GFS depiction of the system in 144 hours, or next Friday morning. The official forecast calls for a 110 mph hurricane at that point.
