The weather story for Central Alabama remains the ridge! It appears that the ridge will hold strong through the weekend and the next week keeping things dry and warm. Morning lows will be in the 60s so that will feel nice but the afternoon highs will remain in the lower and mid 90s. However, while this static weather pattern is not what we might like to see, the “energizer” ridge is protecting us from tropical systems.

The continued presence of the upper ridge means that we will continue to see dry weather through the upcoming week. The GFS is suggesting a change may be about to take place as the ridge slowly shifts westward toward the end of the week. This will establish the ridge over the western US and allow a trough to drop into the eastern US. This could mean some rain and cooler highs for the next week. But that does verge on voodoo country, so we’ll keep a wary, somewhat hopeful eye on those prognostications.

Tropics are still active. Karl is no more but the remnants continue to bring heavy rain to eastern Mexico and South Texas. Igor is still a major hurricane but weakening as it approaches Bermuda. It appears likely that Bermuda will take a direct hit with the center of Igor going right over the island. Julia is east of Igor and weakening, too. Julia is a tropical storm and could be down to a depression by Monday.

The train of disturbed weather areas continues behind all of these with one off the east coast of Africa and another one about the emerge from the African continent.

Changes do seem likely as we look further afield. The GFS is suggesting a trough over the eastern half of the country during the last week of September. It’s also projecting what appears to be a hurricane in the Gulf around the third of October. Since our weather is so quiet this certainly gives us a great deal of ammunition of all kinds of speculation. All I can say is, “We’ll see!”

Working at Cheaha today and the early morning breeze is actually a little chilly with temperatures in the 60s. There is almost always a breeze at Cheaha which is one of the things that makes it a great place to visit. I am going to be working on staining the walkway to Bald Rock this morning. Much of the Blog gang is in Starkville, MS, for the Southeast Severe Weather Symposium. I hope you have a great weekend. Godspeed.
