Wet and Cooler Today

The front to the northwest of us has sagged down into Central Alabama overnight bringing clouds, showers, patchy rain, and isolated thunderstorms with it. This should set the stage for a somewhat wet and much cooler day across Central Alabama. I don’t expect to see highs get much above 80 to 82 range and many places could stay in the upper 70s – a strikingly big change from the last several months!
The rain will be off and on since it is of the convective nature. The front finally got here thanks to the upper trough that is in the process of closing off an upper low over the middle Mississippi River Valley. The center of the upper low should be positioned near Northwest Alabama tomorrow. This puts the greatest rain threat for Monday to the east of Alabama but I expect to see the rain chances tapering off from the west during the day Monday.
Rainfall amounts are expected to be the highest in East Central Alabama where 3 to 4 inches is not impossible. Rainfall amounts will fall off to the northwest, so I suspect many folks will see on the order of 1 to 2 inches with lightest amounts of less than 1 inch toward Northwest Alabama.
The closed low and upper trough pull off to the east and northeast on Tuesday paving the way for a cool, Fall-ish day with morning lows in the 50s and afternoon highs in the upper 70s. With the trough to our east and the northwesterly flow maintained, we should see more seasonal temperatures for the rest of the week with lows mainly in the 50s and highs from 78 to 85. Perhaps the 90s are really gone for us!! While the ridge does maintain itself to our west, it appears less possible today that the ridge will push its influence eastward enough to bring back any significant heat.
Tropics have become less active as Matthew and Lisa have both degenerated into depressions and continue to dissipate. I do want to correct a statement in the video. I said they were both no threat to land. By that I meant threats from wind. Matthew is a serious threat to Central America and portions of extreme southern Mexico due to heavy rain which will producing flash flooding and mud slides.
We stay dry with the trough to the east of Alabama. The GFS brings about some interesting mischief with a weak low in the Gulf which will bear watching, however, I’m not sure that this will be a classic tropical system. The main impact should be rain across Florida as any development should move to the northeast.

Great day at Cheaha State Park yesterday with the chili cook-off and the Helping Hands Arts and Crafts Festival. I tallied about 800 tickets at the front gate, so lots of folks enjoyed a sunny but warm day on the mountain. I hope you have a great day today and enjoy the rain. James Spann will be back with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video tomorrow morning. Godspeed.
