THIS AFTERNOON: Showers are impossible to find on radar across the great state of Alabama this afternoon… looks like the air is too dry for any development. Temperatures are generally in the 70s, with values ranging from 71 at Tuscaloosa (where low clouds during the morning have kept temperatures lower) to 79 at Birmingham.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: A fresh north breeze will usher in a nice shot of cool air. Highs drop into the low 70s tomorrow, and we will be well down in the 40s by early Friday. Delightful autumn weather continues over the weekend with sunny days, highs in the 70s, and lows in the 40s. Just about perfect weather for high school and college football games across Alabama and the Deep South.

NEXT WEEK: Our weather will stay for the first half of the week with comfortable temperatures. An approaching upper trough will bring the risk of showers by late Wednesday, Wednesday night, and perhaps into Thursday. Unfortunately the 12Z run of the GFS is not very aggressive with the rain, suggesting only light amounts.

LAND OF VOODOO: While the 12Z GFS is not bullish on cold air over the east during the last week of the month, we note the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) is forecast to be negative, which usually opens for door for an upper trough over the east and rather chilly air down into the Deep South. I still figure we have a very good chance of seeing the first freeze of the season before Halloween this year. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

PAULA: The category two hurricane will weaken in coming days and move slowly eastward over the island of Cuba. Life threatening flooding is very possible over Cuba, but this system won’t effect the Gulf of Mexico. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

I had a wonderful time today visiting the 6th graders at Berry Middle School, and seeing the men at the Jimmie Hale Mission at their morning chapel service. Tony Cooper and his staff truly do a wonderful job of ministering to the men in their care. Look for the Berry kids on the Pepsi KIDCAM on ABC 33/40 News today at 5:00… the next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
