Attention: Gadsden
I saw this comment on the blog yesterday from “Tom”:
“This is for James Spann. There is no such mountain as Noccalula Mountain. Noccalula Falls are on Lookout Mountain. Gadsden is the Southern terminus of Lookout Mountain, the Northern terminus being Chattanooga, Tennessee. Noccalula is an Indian (Native American) word meaning “black waterâ€. Black Creek flows over Noccalula “Black Water†Falls. Please use the correct name for this historical mountain. Yours, Tom”
I do agree with Tom that Lookout Mountain is technically correct, but in my 28 years of doing this, most folks who report to us (Skywatchers, etc) that live on the mountain just north of downtown Gadsden refer to that segment of the ridge as “Noccalula Mountain”. We prefer names for places that people use who actually live there.
SO… if you live in Gadsden, do you call the ridge just north of downtown Lookout Mountain, or Noccalula Mountain?
