A Late Look at Richard

Tropical Storm Richard has top winds of 70 mph late tonight as it moves just north of the Honduran coast.

By the time you read your morning paper tomorrow, it will likely be a hurricane.

It should reach the coast of Belize around 9 p.m. Sunday night. It will likely still be only a category one hurricane.

It will then spend Monday and much of Tuesday traversing the Yucatan Peninsula. That will take nearly all of the stuffing out it and when it emerges into the Gulf of Mexico, it won’t find the Welcome Wagon.

In fact, the welcome will be hostile and Richard should quickly become a remnant low. This is good news for places like the West Coast of Florida, where we thought that we might deal with a landfalling hurricane later this week. Richard’s moisture should stay well south of Alabama.
