THIS AFTERNOON: Scroll down for some reports from across the state this afternoon… our SKYCAM at Cheaha State Park is reporting 43 degrees right now with periods of light rain mixed with snow. We have other reports of snow flakes across the high terrain of Northeast Alabama, and many reports of sleet mixed with the rain due to the very cold atmosphere over Alabama. We note the 500 mb temperature at 7:00 this morning was -31 degrees (C), about as cold as it gets up there.

CHILLY WEEKEND: Not much change in our thinking for the weekend. Most places will be in the 28-32 degree range early tomorrow… winds will remain out of the north at 5 to 10 mph through the night, so there won’t be much range. However, Sunday morning will feature a calm wind, and the colder valleys could drop down into the 22 to 25 degree range, with upper 20s and low 30s elsewhere. The air will be very dry, so expect a sunny sky tomorrow and Sunday. The high tomorrow will be in the mid 50s, followed by low 60s Sunday.

HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFFS: Take the coat, the gloves, the hat, and some money for hot chocolate or coffee tonight (that is, if you think 40s are cold)! The Friday Night Blitz Game of the Week is Northridge at Mountain Brook; temperatures will drop from around 45º at kick off to near 40º in the fourth quarter with a light north breeze at 6 to 12 miles per hour. It will be colder in northeast Alabama and the Tennessee Valley; most games will wind up with upper 30s and a little frost on the windshield if the wind dies down enough by the fourth quarter. From Birmingham south, it will still be chilly, but not quite as cold; temperatures will hold in the lower and mid-40s from the first kick to the end of the game with a clear sky and light breeze.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SATURDAY: UAB hosts Marshall tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 at Legion Field, and Samford hosts Wofford at 2:00 PM (both are homecoming games). Early on, the sun will warm us into the middle 50s with a north breeze gusting to 20 or 25 miles per hour, but by the fourth quarter, you’ll be a little chilly as the thermometer begins to drop back into the upper 40s. Auburn hosts Chattanooga at Jordan-Hare tomorrow at noon; it will be similar to the weather around Birmingham. Expect a sunny sky with a north breeze with temperatures in the lower and mid-50s throughout the game. And for the legion of Bama fans headed to Baton Rouge (and for our readers who are already there), the 2:30 PM kickoff at Tiger Stadium will feature a sunny sky, a north breeze, and pleasant temperatures! The high in “Red Stick” tomorrow will reach 63 degrees, but it will be cooling quickly into the 50s by the fourth quarter.

NEXT WEEK: We stay dry through Thursday with a warming trend. The high should rise into the low 70s Tuesday, with mid 70s Wednesday. Still looks like the next chance of rain comes at the end of the week; the 12Z GFS is a little more aggressive with this system. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: The 12Z GFS shows a good soaker for Alabama and the Deep South around November 17, but we all know that could change. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details.

TOMAS: This hurricane is passing between the eastern tip of Cuba and the coast of Haiti with sustained winds of 85 mph. It actually looks like some of the heaviest rain is over the Dominican Republic at the moment. Tomas will weaken late in the weekend and dissipate south of Bermuda next week.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up November 13 at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. See you there!
