Cold!
No Weather Xtreme Video this morning due to connectivity issues. Guess the Internet service on Cheaha is responding to the cold weather, too!
My headline is simple but sums up conditions for Central Alabama well this morning.
The combination of a large surface high sprawled across the eastern half of the country from just south of Hudson Bay to the northwestern Gulf of Mexico together with the deepest upper level trough we’ve seen in quite some time has brought the first freeze of the Fall to Central Alabama. In fact, temperatures in the 20 dipped all the way into western and middle Tennessee.
The pattern will be shifting slightly but it will be quite cold today – somewhat like yesterday – with an afternoon high only in the lower 50s.
Sunday morning will see another round of freezing temperatures, but Monday morning may be at or just above the freezing mark as a warming trend sets in.
While the surface high remains in place through the first part of the week, the upper air pattern shifts to a ridge which will help to warm us back into the 70s Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
A strong trough coming out the Rockies is expected to bring a storm system across the Central US on Thursday and Friday. This system and the upper trough will drag a cold front through the Southeast on Friday bringing our next chance for rain. The trough could be strong enough to produce a round of strong thunderstorms so we’ll need to keep our eye on how that system develops.
We dry out and cool slightly for the weekend.
The tropics remain focused on Tomas which just keeps kicking along. Tropical storm Tomas has moved across the southern Bahamas and was headed out into the Atlantic. While Tomas is close to hurricane strength, it is likely to remain a tropical storm as conditions continue to become more unfavorable for it.

Will be working the front gate at Cheaha again today. The 100 mile run that comes across Alabama’s highest point gets under way this morning. I met two of the crazy participants yesterday and found out the it will take them 24 hours to make the run! Crazy!!! I hope they all have warm clothing, too. Have a great day and Godspeed.
